“Fat Acceptance” and the Real Medical Cost of Obesity

The fat acceptance movement (also known as size acceptance, fat liberation, fat activism, fativism or fat power movement) is a social movement seeking to change anti-fat bias in society.

At its core, this movement is a very positive thing. Self love and freedom are concepts that are important in living a healthy, happy life. Many of these activists argue that the health risks of obesity is grossly overstated.

In reality, the correlation between obesity and things like diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure are well known and accepted.

But did you know about the other medical complications and impact on health and the receiving care that come with obesity?

  1. Intubation can be more difficult
Intubation, the process by which a tube is inserted in the trachea to assist in breathing is often done in emergent situations. Difficulty intubating=decreased oxygen to the brain.
  2. Pap smears are more difficult
Excess weight can make vaginal walls collapse, making location of the cervix more difficult. The pap is key for early detection of cervical cancer.
  3. Procedures involving the spine like epidurals and lumbar punctures (spinal taps) are more difficult
Typical needles are a maximum 1.5 inch long. Excess fatty tissue (adipose tissue) to the back can make important landmarks difficult to find, this can lead to multiple painful or unsuccessful attempts.
  4. Healing is worse
Adipose tissue has really bad blood flow, this means that people who are over weight are more likely to develop ulcers caused by pressure to the skin, and they tend to experience delayed wound healing.
  5. Surgery is more complicated
Overweight patients are more prone to infection, seromas (collections of fluid that expose the wound to bacteria), Dehiscence (separation of the incisional suture, exposing the wound to bacteria) Anastomotic leaks (after bariatric surgery the new connection of intestines may not heal properly and leak).
